About the Doc Competition

About the Doc Competition
The Doc Competition was established in 1988 as a means to recognize outstanding achievement in contract design. The Doc Competition has become one of the architecture and design community’s premier benchmarks of success, attained by only the top professionals. Conducted annually by an independent jury, the competition honors superior achievement in contract projects that orchestrate color, space, form, function and materials with consummate finesse. In addition to honoring project design, the competition also honors carpet mills for outstanding achievement in product design. Carpet products are judged based on originality of design, overall aesthetic, pricing and usability in the contract environment.

The Doc Competition is named to honor a true pioneer and an inspirational leader in the contract interior design industry: Robert F. Docherty, also known as “Doc.”

Doc was among the first in the industry to recognize the important role of the interior designer. He pioneered the use of carpet in both education and healthcare segments, funding the research that resulted in the first use of carpet in patient care areas. He was instrumental in founding the specifiers continuing education program conducted at our manufacturing facilities.

Doc’s vision for contract interiors and passion for leading-edge design continues to thrive through Ultron's Doc Competition, and our celebration of the winners.
